Yachts

Nautilus has partnerships across the yachting world with agencies in countries including France, Spain, Monaco, the UK and Guernsey.

Yachts can vary a great deal in size, but the largest superyachts have substantial crews including hotel and catering staff.

Today's superyachts are crewed by experienced maritime professionals qualified under the IMO Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) convention. And they are increasingly interested in joining a professional body such as Nautilus, which offers them the kind of professional support and certificate protection they need.

Any yachting professional can become a Nautilus member, regardless of their country of nationality or residence. They can be yachtmasters (skippers), ship's officers (navigation and engineering), and senior service staff such as the chief steward, as well as interior crew in all roles, and deckhands.

Collective bargaining agreements

This is a growing sector which is still adjusting to the professionalisation of its crew, and Nautilus does not yet have collective bargaining (recognition) agreements here. But many yacht personnel and employers do appreciate the benefits of such agreements, and it is likely that these will become more common in the future. Nautilus welcomes opportunities to develop agreements for those working onboard yachts wherever they are in the world.

Service record book

Members working in the large yacht sector are urged to take advantage of the Union's industry-leading Service Record Book (SRB) which is available free of charge to members, and will help speed up the certification process at the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The Nautilus SRB helps members to record and calculate qualifying sea service for certification, and is used by examiners when evaluating sea service. Nautilus has worked closely with the MCA in developing this facility for yachting members.

Superyacht crew can still present their proof of seatime using ordinary testimonials, but the Nautilus SRB will ensure their application for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE) can be dealt with quickly. Those seafarers using individual testimonials are likely to experience delays as the MCA will need to verify these in detail.

Who administers the Nautilus SRB?

The SRB is administered from the Union's Wallasey office, but members can also be assisted with the process in the Antibes office where we have a partnership with yacht management specialist D&B Services who have full MCA recognition as a training provider for the STCW2010 Basic Safety Training in Antibes.

Sea service verification

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Marine Information Note (MIN) 543 (M) describes the revised arrangements for verification of sea service testimonials of seafarers working in the large yacht sector. The notice formalises arrangements for delegating authority for verification of sea service to Nautilus for its members.

The Union has also produced a sea service testimonal template and a handy guide to the verification process it uses for assisting members with a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) or the revalidation of a Certificate of Competency (CoC).

Nautilus is also trialling a digital sea service form for members:

Please email feedback on the digtial sea service form to yachts@nautilusint.org

Yacht Friends of Nautilus

Friends of Nautilus campaign

Seafarers working onboard superyachts can become either a full member, and enjoy all the full legal protection benefits and the free SRB, or join as a 'Yacht Friend of Nautilus' (YFON) during the Union's dedicated campaign.

The Friends' scheme entitles them to receive an SRB with yearly/annual sea service verification, access to the members' only section of our website, and to our Nautilus Plus discount scheme for only €95.00 for 12 months.

You can become a Yacht Friend of Nautilus by visiting the Join online form and selecting the relevant package selection under the Promotions heading, or via our partner D&B Services office in Antibes, France.

Those seafarers that want to be fully protected by the full range of Nautilus benefits – including our unrivalled industrial support, worldwide legal assistance, and certificate protection – must join as a full member, or upgrade their YFON membership in advance of requiring these services.

Seafarers' Employment Agreements

The Union has produced a SEA contract advice guide for members to help yacht crew ensure that their employment contracts are in line with the Maritime Labour Convention on Seafarers' Employment Agreements (SEAs).

Members can find the guide by logging in to My Nautilus/Member resources.

Nobody should start work without an SEA, because it entitles seafarers to a fair employment agreement or contract setting out decent living and working conditions onboard. It must be signed by the seafarer and the employer, be easy to understand and be legally enforceable.

All information on the terms and conditions of employment, including the CBA, must be freely accessible to everyone onboard and available for inspection in port.

Yacht partnerships

Nautilus continues to open up dialogue with crews, agencies, employers, owners and regulatory authorities across the yacht sector. To provide a tailored service to members in the sector, we've established partnerships with agencies across the yachting world, including in Antibes, Mallorca, Monaco and the UK.
