Nautilus motion on women in maritime supported by TUC Women's Conference

9 March 2021

A Nautilus motion calling for an increase in the number of women in traditionally male dominated maritime industries was passed at the TUC Women's Conference on 3-5 March 2021.

The motion welcomed the newly formed Women in Maritime Network and Diversity in Maritime Taskforce, which supports female seafarers and other under-represented groups, stating that 'this network will connect female maritime professionals and maritime companies both at sea and ashore to work together on initiatives including a diversity charter, women speakers for panels and women for interview panels.'

The motion, which was also supported by the RMT union, calls on the TUC to:

  • support networks which provide safe spaces for women seafarers
  • discuss how to encourage more women into the maritime sector
  • increase the number of women in traditionally male dominated industries

The motion is part of the Union's wider Fair Access campaign, which argues for equal opportunities for training and career progression.
