Netherlands-based Heerema Marine Contractors has launched the world’s largest semi-submersible crane vessel that can be used for the set-up and de-commissioning of offshore oil and gas facilities.
The $1.5bn 'ship of the future' Sleipnir, named after Norse God Odin’s eight-legged stallion, was built by Sembcorp Marine at its Singapore yard.
It is equipped with two cranes that can reach a height of 220m, taller than the top of Singapore’s iconic boat-shaped Marina Bay Sands hotel.
The cranes have a combined 20,000tonnes lifting and transporting capacity - another industry record.
The vessel has accommodation for 400 people and includes a helicopter pad and a swimming pool.
It is fuelled by both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gasoil.
